How to Change a Flat Tire: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Get to a Safe Spot
If you're driving when the flat hits:
Slow down gradually.
Find a flat, level area away from traffic (like a shoulder or parking lot).
Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
Never try to change a tire on a curve, hill, or narrow shoulder if it's unsafe—call for professional help.
Step 2: Secure the Vehicle
Apply the parking brake.
Use wheel wedges (or heavy objects like bricks) behind the tires to prevent rolling—especially if you’re changing a rear tire, place them in front of the front tires (and vice versa).
Step 3: Loosen the Lug Nuts
Use the lug wrench to turn the nuts counterclockwise.
Don’t fully remove them yet—just break the resistance while the wheel is still on the ground. You might need to use some body weight or a foot for leverage.
Step 4: Lift the Vehicle with the Jack
Find your vehicle’s jack point (usually near the tire and marked in the owner's manual or on the frame).
Position the jack and raise the car until the flat tire is about 6 inches off the ground.
Step 5: Remove the Lug Nuts and Tire
Now fully unscrew the lug nuts and set them aside (don’t lose them!).
Carefully pull the flat tire off the wheel bolts and lay it flat on the ground.
Step 6: Mount the Spare Tire
Line up the spare tire’s holes with the bolts and slide it into place.
Hand-tighten the lug nuts as much as you can.
Step 7: Lower the Car and Tighten the Lug Nuts
Use the jack to slowly lower the car back to the ground.
Once it's down, use the wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern (to keep the wheel evenly secured).
Step 8: Check and Clean Up
Make sure the lug nuts are secure.
Stow your tools and the flat tire in your trunk.
Drive cautiously—especially if you're on a temporary spare ("donut") which is not designed for long distances or high speeds.
